Mike O’Malley is an Honors Faculty Advisor. He works with students to help them reflect thoughtfully on their university experience and determine how to best reach their goals at UF and beyond. Mike believes in the value of higher education as a form of common good – and that students in the Honors Program have an opportunity to take the lead in shaping the culture at UF, prioritizing broad and connective academic inquiry, service to others, and a posture of life-long learning.

Before joining Honors, Mike worked as a first-year advisor in the UF College of Engineering. He holds an AM degree in Humanities with a focus on cultural policy and a certificate in non-profit management from the University of Chicago, and undergraduate degrees in English from UF and art history from Columbia College. Currently, he’s working on a PhD in UF’s Department of Urban & Regional Planning researching the role of arts and culture within urban regeneration projects. During summer, Mike leads the Honors course for the UF in Lille study abroad program in Lille, France. He’s logged extensive international travel as part of a former position at UChicago, plus over 10 years of college teaching experience.

When not chatting with students, Mike plays music with a local band around town, golfs badly, and enjoys watching sports of all kinds. Oh, and he wears exclusively animal socks – any guess which species is afoot today?
